Updates to Instagram feed

Social media is ever-changing, and with many platforms being a key communications tool for most businesses, it’s important to stay up-to-date on the latest app changes and trends to effectively communicate with your audiences.

Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, recently announced the app was testing three different feeds so users can select the type of content they enjoy seeing from a drop-down menu. This new direction will mean users have more control of their Instagram experience and the way they consume content.

The updates will be a welcome change for many following ongoing user backlash stemming from 2016 when the platform switched tact and replaced chronological feeds with an algorithm that showed you want you ‘wanted to see’.

While we won’t be saying goodbye to this algorithmic content altogether, users will have the option to see content of the people and pages they follow in a chronological order – and people are excited about this!

The new drop-down feed options we can expect to see are as follows:

  • Home – the Instagram experience you know today, where content is ranked based on how interested they think you are in the posts,

  • Following – a chronological list of posts from all the accounts you follow,

  • Favourites – will show you posts from what Instagram describes as a ‘curated list of accounts’.

Mosseri noted that the Home feed will have more and more recommended posts over time, so this feed will continue to show us curated content of want we ‘want to see’.

Instagram has not yet announced a launch date for these new features, however we can expect to see them rolled out in the first half of this year.

Be sure to keep an eye out on the Hunter Communications channels – we’ll keep you updated!
